Visiting child in helmet
A child tries a helmet for size.

Organising an event? Hwitmearum can provide arena displays and Living History Exhibits for museums and schools and for town and village shows within Oxfordshire.

We have participated in one, two and three day shows and are available to provide a small encampment with civilians, craftspeople and visual displays. Typically our living history display might show food preparation, wood working or similar crafts, a scriptorium, games or a small armoury display. Our members are knowledgeable about life in Anglo Saxon and Viking times and very happy to share their expertise with visitors to the encampent.

Meet the Anglo Saxons or Vikings. Try on a helmet. Hold a sword. Write with a quill. Learn about life 1000 years ago.

The arena displays can take the shape of combat training demonstrations, Arming the Warrior and competitive combat displays.

We have worked with museums, schools and local fairs and festivals. We can display a vast array of reproduction artefacts, which are made to be as accurate as possible, including clothing, arms and armour, craft items, tools and jewellery. We aim to give an authentic insight into early medieval life.

What was life like for women? What was life like for children? What did it feel like to stand in the shield wall?.
